Homemade Essential Oil Bug Bite Balm To Soothe Those Itchy Bites

Luckily, with the right essential oil, you can actually make your own effective bug bite balm. The balm acts as a salve that relieves itching, accelerates healing and reduces the swelling of a sting or a bite. The best thing of all is that a homemade bug bite using essential oils contains no artificial scents, chemicals, colors and petroleum hence it manages to work for very skin type offering the best results.

Ingredients for the balm

Coconut oil is one of the ingredients needed for the balm. It makes it to this recipe because of its ability to accelerate the healing process and providing anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The oil is also an antimicrobial and antiseptic and is full of antioxidants that make it just perfect for the balm.

Beeswax works in the balm by binding and thickening the oils and it also creates a barrier over the wound so it remains protected, allowing the oils to seep in for effective results.

Olive oil is also necessary in the bug bite balm because it moisturizes the skin and it is also packed with essential antioxidants.

The essential oils of course cannot be forgotten and the best are peppermint, lemon, lavender and tea tree essential oils. The oils all have antibacterial properties and they help in offering fast relief from the bites. They offer relief, disinfect wound and keep infections at bay.


  1. Fill your pot half with water and place a glass Pyrex bowl in the pot. A glass bowl with spout is best for this.
  2. Add ¼ cup of olive oil, 2 tbs of beeswax and ¼ cup of coconut oil into the glass bowl.
  3. Heat at medium levels and allow the ingredients to completely melt, then remove the bowl from heat.
  4. Add 20 drops of peppermint essential oil, 20 of lavender, 20 of lemon and 10 of tea tree essential oils.
  5. Pour your mixture into selected containers and allow cooling so you have a solid but a soft balm ready for use.

Using the balm

This home recipe is enough to make 4 ounces and this means you remain covered for a long period of time against itchy bites. This homemade salve is suitable not just for bug bites, but also chapped skin, burns, cuts and boils.
